The Big Picture Society. The League of Women Voters Leelanau County will host its fourth Big Picture Society film presentation at the Old Art Building at 111 Main Street in Leland on Monday, April 14, 2014, at 4:00 PM. After this April film the Big Picture Society will resume in the fall featuring films of public interest on current political/environmental and/or social justice topics.

The April 14th film is the first feature film made by a female Saudi director and filmed inside Saudi Arabia. A 10-year-old girl wants a bicycle so she can race against the little boy who lives next door. Her mother refuses to buy her one because in Saudi Arabia little girls do not ride bikes. The young girl takes matters into her own hands and decides to raise the money for a bicycle herself. USA Today notes "Not only is this a deftly crafted and superbly acted film, but it sheds a powerful light on what women face, starting in childhood, in an oppressive regime."

There is no fee for the movie but good will donations to the LWVLC will be accepted. You may bring refreshments to share. No alcohol allowed.

Are We Crazy About Our Kids? The Cost/Benefit Equation. The film Are We Crazy About Our Kids explores how investing in high quality early childhood services and care pays for itself in many ways and many times over. Moreover, participants in quality early childhood experiences are more likely to graduate high school and college, get better jobs and contribute more in taxes. They are less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol, be unemployed, go to jail or incur other social costs. In short, they are better students and citizens and are more responsible contributors to our community. A win-win for the community, schools and business.

Big Picture Society. Joyeau Noel -- In 1914, World War I, the bloodiest war ever at that time in human history, was well under way. However on Christmas Eve, numerous sections of the Western Front called an informal, and unauthorized, truce where the various front-line soldiers of the conflict peacefully met each other in No Man's Land to share a precious pause in the carnage with a fleeting brotherhood. This film dramatizes one such section as the French, Scottish and German sides partake in the unique event, even hough they are aware that their superiors will not tolerate its occurrence.

Big Picture Society - Fed Up. Upending the conventional wisdom of why we gain weight and how to lose it, the film Fed Up unearths a dirty secret of the American food industry. More of us get sick from what we eat than anyone has previously realized. Filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig and TV journalist Katie Couric lead us through this potent exposť that uncovers why despite media attention, the public's fascination with appearance, and government policies to combat childhood obesity generations of American children will now live shorter lives than their parents did.

There is no fee for the movie but good will donations to the LWVLC will be accepted. You may bring refreshments to share. No alcohol allowed.

Member Meeting. LWVLC Feb. 4, 2015 Event: Building a Sustainable Planet through Carbon Fee and Dividend Legislation

The League of Women Voters Leelanau County Energy and Natural Resources Committee will host a presentation on Building a Sustainable Planet through Carbon Fee and Dividend Legislation on Wednesday February 4, 2015 at noon in the lower level public meeting room of the Leelanau County Government Center. Lisa Del Buono and Elizabeth Dell from Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) will be the presenters. The Citizens' Climate Lobby is a non-partisan grassroots advocacy organization, with 200 chapters across the U.S. and Canada, dedicated to generating the political will for effective national policies to address climate. Del Bouno and Dell will address proposed Carbon Fee and Dividend legislation, it's economic/job impacts and changes in future energy mixes and emissions reductions.

Carbon Fee and Dividend legislation would charge fossil fuel companies a steadily-rising fee on the carbon dioxide content of the fuels they extract or import. The revenues would be returned on a per capita basis to households as a monthly rebate. With the inclusion of border tariffs on imports from nations that lack an equivalent carbon price, Carbon Fee and Dividend provides the motivation for other nations to adopt a similar policy.

Come learn more about this simple and transparent model for combating climate chaos and our excessive consumption of fossil fuel.

The public is invited. Many people bring a sack lunch. LWVLC business meeting to follow presentation.

"Once Upon a Time: When Childcare for All Wasn't Just a Fairytale.". On Monday, February 23, 2015 the League of Women Voters Leelanau County, along with seven community organizations, will show a second episode in "The Raising of America" documentary series: "Once Upon a Time: When Childcare for All Wasn't Just a Fairytale." This film traces the history of legislative efforts to create high quality early childhood services for our country's young children. It helps us imagine how things might be different if all American children had access to the high quality early care and education that is available in other developed nations. A follow up discussion with community leaders will continue the conversation about where we go from here in creating the kind of environment that values young children and supports their families.

The community is invited to attend a 6:30 pm gathering, with refreshments, in the Community Room of the Leelanau Government Center followed by the film at 7:00pm. A panel discussion will follow. A box of diapers is a suggested donation.

In November 2014 the League of Women Voters and a number of Leelanau County organizations opened a community conversation about how our country can better support families and their young children. They showed "Are We Crazy About Our Kids", part of "The Raising of America" documentary series to the community. That episode focused on how investment in high quality early childcare and education can pay big economic dividends many times over. Community business leaders spoke to this point in a panel discussion following the showing.
